The Awareness Poster

My poster was designed to raise awareness of diseases that harm or be fatal to pets and animals and to encourage people to take action to prevent them. The reason I chose to focus on this topic is because I have unfortunately experienced the worst-case scenario. The dog in my poster was my girl Friday, who passed away from a disease I had never even heard of a month before she turned four. At the beginning of the week everything was normal and by the end she was gone, and one of the most frustrating parts was that there is a vaccine that could have protected her, but the veterinarian had never even mentioned it before. My ultimate goal with choosing this issue is to encourage people to be advocates for their furry friend’s health so they can live long, healthy lives.

The aesthetic of my work is inspired by the vintage style of posters from the mid-twentieth century. I have always liked how these posters looked realistic while actually being illustrations, as well as the bright, yet toned down color palette typically used. I put most of the work into combining different lighting effects and filters to give my dog that painted, retro look. I went through examples of posters to try and get an idea of the kind of fonts used and how to arrange them. I added the shadow and the slight texture of old paper in order to give the poster dimension and as little details to further capture the vintage style. I had previously planned to add a band-aid, but I decided on using a design because I feel like it does a better job at communicating the message.
