Sketches For A Book Cover

The book I choose for my project is Grimm’s Fairy Stories. I remember reading this book over and over again when I was in elementary school, repeatedly checking it out from the library. When I was looking through the course schedule at the beginning of the semester, I saw there would be an assignment to redesign a book cover, so in preparation I decided to once more go through the book as a college student and see honor it by using it in the assignment.

The book itself is a huge collection of different fairy tales’ by the brothers Grimm, including famous stories like Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Little Snow White. While the Disney movies may be the more famous versions of these tales, the originals are much less happy and magical and more gruesome and mature. For example, in Cinderella one of the stepsisters cuts off part of her foot to try and fit into the glass slipper.

For my designs, I wanted to incorporate imagery from the variety of the stories while also including elements of the style of the 1800s and the original cover. By adding graphics and images, I hope to create a more modernized look compared to the simplicity of the book I read.

I included: Little Snow White, Little Briar Rose, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, and The Frog King.
