The Photomontage Finale
Problems in education are vast and can stem from a lot of
different places. The issue I am focusing on here is people being ignorant to
or unaware of important historical events and other knowledge. I chose to use
the picture of the mushroom cloud over Nagasaki after the atomic bomb was
dropped because of the visual itself. At a glance and without the context, the
image could easily be thought of or mistaken to just be a simple pair of clouds
in a strange formation or endless possibilities for some kind of artistic work,
most likely not the aftermath of a massive, deadly explosion. Marilyn Monroe, however;
is one of the most recognizable figures in pop culture, and the screenshot of
her in The 7 Year Itch is iconic in film. I particularly enjoyed the
visual results of combining the two photos together because of how Marilyn’s
skirt blowing and the contrast of her expression mesh with the force behind her.
Division might not be the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to mind when it comes to social and political issues, but that has probably got something to do with what makes it a problem. With all the debates over different opinions of what is right and the wars for change and justice, it is easy to forget or maybe not even realize how the passion of beliefs can divide people and leave the world worse off. I chose to focus on this subject because while people should always fight for what they believe in, we should remember that, underneath all of the differences, we are all together. My intentions with incorporating The Child from Star Wars with Michaelangelo’s Creation of Adam was to create an image that represents the idea of all life having a connection. I decided to use The Child both because of how recognizable and popular the Star Wars franchise is and to have a light-hearted, innocent tone.
