One Universe

Issue 1: Division

Fighting for different social and political causes often creates tension and division amongst all in involved. By using Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam as a base and inspiration, I choose to sketch four figures all connecting with the hand of God to symbolize that everyone is connected. I hope to convey the message that we are all apart of one universe with E.T., galaxy with The Child, planet with a dog, and family with Homer Simpson, despite differences, and should not be divided by them.

Issue 2: Education

Which could more people identify? Mickey Mouse or the mushroom cloud over Nagasaki after the atomic bomb was dropped? The goal I have with my second issue is to address the problem of people lacking knowledge that should be common. I definitely have nothing against pop culture, but people should know more about history and the world. By placing a number of characters in front of the mushroom cloud, I wanted to communicate the idea of people giving second thought, if any at all, to important events.

Issue 3: Child Neglect/Abuse

The idea behind the horrible treatment of baby Simba from The Lion King in my third set of sketches is to portray forms of child neglect and abuse. I choose to include portrayals of abandonment, endangerment, alcohol/drug related neglect, and the use of children for welfare abuse. I choose to use this image because of the resulting contrast. In the movie, this is a moment of honoring and cherishing  the new life of a child, while neglect and abuse in my project are a terrible opposite.
